We had been trying to figure out a way to generate a little more interest in the 16 & over expert/pro open that had been running at the track for the last few years. Last week’s opening day rainout gave the group of guys that have been responsible for infecting most of the changes over this offseason just enough extra time to come up with something that would stick. Time trials. The idea is to qualify for the race and reserve your first round gate pick through a timed lap. The eight riders with the fastest lap times would qualify for the open scheduled to run as three main events with the regular motos, awarding the win to the most consistent top finisher.
To get a gauge on how the riders and spectators would respond we ran a test of the time trials only. We also invited two riders that are just shy of qualifying for this class to join the time trial test run. All of the feedback we received from both the riders and the spectators was very positive. The riders had a good time cheering for each other when they would normally all be on the track together, knowing that they would soon be on the track for a solo run themselves. The spectators really seemed to like watching the riders execute their fastest laps with precision while being able to spot the smallest of mistakes and seeing exactly how each rider was able to approach the track differently and produce similar results.
Below are the results of the inaugural Shoreham BMX Time Trials. We will be sure to post the results throughout the season so check back to see who improves on their time and what out of town racers stop by to put down a fast lap.
